What is a Hologram?

Creating a hologram involves splitting a beam of laser light into two beams: the object beam and the reference beam.

The object ray is directed towards the object to be holographed and is reflected from it. In contrast, the reference ray is directed directly to the recording medium (such as a photosensitive plate).

When these two light beams are combined, they interact and form interference patterns. These interference patterns are recorded on the photosensitive plate, creating a kind of “fingerprint” that contains information about the phase and amplitude of the light waves reflected from the object.

Then, when the plate is illuminated with another beam of laser light identical to the reference one, the information stored on the plate is “reproduced,” and the observer can see the three-dimensional image of the object.
